Dr. Allen's 10 Commandments of Sleep

•  A medical alert bracelet notifying that you have sleep apnoea requiring nasal CPAP.

•  Warn your doctor, dentist and anaesthetist that you have sleep apnoea, otherwise you may have an adverse outcome after any operation or anaesthetic.

•  Avoid using cruise control in a car.

•  Avoid driving if sleepy.

•  Avoid driving where possible at night, in the early morning or just after lunch. It is possible that your license may be recalled if you have untreated sleep apnoea. Even small quantities of alcohol may have adverse effects on motor skills eg. the ability to drive and operate machinery in a person with untreated sleep apnoea.

•  If you take new medications you should tell your doctor that you have sleep apnoea.

•  It is recommended that you try to prevent excessive weight gain.

•  It is recommended that you obtain further advice from a local sleep association.

•  Use CPAP when you nap also.

•  See your Sleep Physician at least annually for a check-up.
